I did a New Years Eve gig with some friends at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge, MA. Not exactly the type of gig you do for creative satisfaction. Frankly, I did it for the money. Having said that, the players on the gig were wonderful. Ginny Fordham (vocals) and Steve Wilkes (drums) of Fordham-Wilkes fame, Joe Santerre (yes, the Bass God), and Dino Govoni (sax). Even though some of the tunes we played were, well…. “New Years Eve”-ish, I had a blast playing with these people.
We played in the Atrium of the hotel. Anyone could walk out of their room to the balcony and see us. Toward the end, someone thought it would be fun to throw dirt at us while we played. Ah, yes; the wonders that alchohol does for a persons’ sensibilities….
At the strike of 12:00 we were covered in balloons. Kinda different.
I also heard “La Macarena” (apparently a popular Spanish Disco Line Dance) for the first time. Someone handed us a CD with a picture of a naked female butt on it and demanded we play it on our break. We complied (the CD, not the butt).
I love this business…..
