I Can’t Help It – Improv Lesson

So here’s a tune I heard a fair amount when it came out. One of my dirty little secrets is that I’m a total sucker for good pop tunes. One minute I got my “stink face” on listening to some crazy Frank Zappa, the next I’m swooning to Martina McBride. After that I might go to Beethoven or maybe Earth Wind and Fire followed by a healthy dose of Dream Theater, Meshugga or maybe even Opeth.

Anyway, I stumbled on this tune after not hearing it for many years and forgot how much I dug it. When I found a lead sheet for it, I discovered that Stevie Wonder had written the tune for Michael Jackson.

For the heck of it, I decided to try my hand at an instrumental version. Two things happened:
-It was harder than I thought at first.
-The faster I play, the stupider I sound.

What I’ve decided to do is to post subsequent takes as I continue practicing the piece.
Here’s the lead sheet, backing track and the takes. Enjoy!
